1 Scope

1.1 General

This Standard addresses the following aspects of cementitious materials:

their definitions;

their chemical, physical, and uniformity requirements;

the tests required;

the procedures for inspection and sampling; and

the units of measurement, packaging, marking, and storage.

1.2 Classifications

The cementitious materials for use in concrete are classified as follows in this Standard:

portland cement;

blended hydraulic cement;

portland-limestone cement;

supplementary cementitious materials; and

blended supplementary cementitious materials.

1.3 Terminology

In these Standards, “shall” is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the Standards; “should” is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; and “may” is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the Standards.

1.2 Test methods and standard practices

This Standard is divided into test methods and standard practices, numbered as follows:

A1 to A7, representing dry tests;

B1 to B8, representing paste tests;

C1 to C9, representing mortar tests;

D1, representing a test on limestone; and

E1, representing the evaluation of alternative supplementary materials.

1.3 Contents of test methods and standard practices

Each test method or standard practice contains

a scope;

reference publications;

summary of test;

equipment, and materials; and

test procedure.
