1 Scope

1.1

This Standard outlines requirements for low slope membrane roofing systems (LSMRS) when identified as “silver” and “gold” performance level based on the climate severity and resilience requirements.

Note: The National Building Code of Canada and the National Energy Code of Canada for Buildings provides “bronze” requirements for LSMRS.

1.2

This Standard is intended to be used by building designers, building owners, building code officials, product manufacturers, and installers.

The requirements provided in this Standard do not include, nor are they intended to override, other requirements, by the governing building code or the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ).

1.4

This Standard does not address the climatic adaptation requirements for the structural support (deck) below the LSMRS.

This Standard does not purport to address all the health and safety aspects associated with its use. Anyone using this Standard has the responsibility to consult with the appropriate authorities and to establish health and safety practices, in conjunction with any existing applicable regulatory requirements, prior to its use.

In this Standard, “shall” is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the standard; “should” is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; and “may” is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the Standard.

Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material.

Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written as requirements.

Annexes are designated normative (mandatory) or informative (non-mandatory) to define their application.

Scope

I.1.1 Purpose of CSA A123.26

CSA A123.26 outlines requirements for low slope membrane roofing systems (LSMRS) when identified as “silver” and “gold” performance level based on the climate severity and resilience requirements.

CSA A123.26-21, Performance Requirements for Climate Resilience of Low Slope Membrane Roofing Systems” was developed based on the current best practice used by the roofing community. The framework of the standard and its main sections are summarized in Figure 1.

Steps 1 to 3 are determined using the web-application tool “Climate-RCI” (https://nrc.canada.ca/en/research-development/products-services/software-applications/climate-rci/).

The performance requirements are provided in Table 1 of CSA A123.26.

This user guide provides guidance for the requirements as well as for the application of the requirements. This guidance corresponds to the following sections in the standard:

-      Section 5 (performance requirements)

-      Section 6 (wind performance requirements) and

-      Section 7 (rain performance requirements).

The user guide is intended to be complementary to CSA A123.26 and not a standalone document. Its objective is to simplify the process of applying the standard, minimize the possibility of misinterpretation or improper implementation of the requirements using practical illustrations.

I.1.2 Limitations of CSA A123.26 and CSA A123.27

The requirements outlined in the standard and user guide are based on best practices currently applied by the roofing community. CSA or the technical committee members shall not be liable in any event for any damages, whether direct or indirect, special or general, consequential or incidental, arising from the use of the standard and/or the guide. Responsibility lies with the professional designer.

The user guide does not address requirements specific to earthquake zones.
