Draft Scope/Description:

1.1 Applicable equipment

This Standard applies to newly produced direct gas-fired circulating heaters (see Clause 3, Definitions) of 400,000 Btu (117 228 W) or less, hereinafter referred to as heaters, constructed entirely of new, unused parts and materials and primarily intended for permanent installation with a fixed piping system in Agricultural Animal Confinement Buildings (see Clause 3, Definitions).  All the products of combustion generated by the heater are released into the area being heated.

These requirements apply to heaters having a gas supply pressure rating not exceeding 1/2 psi (3.45 kPa) at the gas inlet of the heater.

This Standard applies to self-contained heaters with integral means for air circulation.

This Standard applies to heaters having an air outlet temperature of 350 F (176.5 C) above room temperature or less (see Clause 5.8.2).

1.2 Excluded equipment

This Standard does not apply to heaters utilized in other agricultural-related buildings where appropriate ventilation is not provided. This Standard does not apply to heaters intended for use as primary heating in green houses.

This Standard does not apply to heater intended for use in buildings for human habitation or sleeping quarters.

This Standard does not cover heaters employing a flameless catalytic combustion process, heaters for use with liquid phase fuel gases, or infrared type heaters.

1.3 Applicable fuel types

Heaters covered by this Standard are intended for use with natural or propane gases.

1.4 Construction requirements

The construction of heaters for use with the above-mentioned gases is covered under Clause 4.

Special construction provisions applicable to a heater for outdoor installation are outlined under Clauses 4.1.5, 4.2.5, 4.2.6, 4.4, 4.6.3, 4.8.4 and 4.21.4.

Special construction provisions for heaters intended for installations subject to high pressure external washdown are outlined under Clauses 4.1.7 and 4.20.1

1.5 Performance requirements

The performance of heaters for use with the above-mentioned gases is covered under Clause 5.

1.6 Reference standards

Clause 2 contains a list of standards specifically referenced in this Standard, and sources from which these reference standards may be obtained.

1.7 Pressure references

All references to “psi” throughout this Standard are to be considered gauge pressure unless otherwise specified.

1.8 Measurement units

This Standard contains SI (Metric) units corresponding to the yard/pound quantities, the purpose being to allow the standard to be used in SI (Metric) units. (IEEE/ASTM SI 10, American National Standard for Metric Practice, or ISO 80000-1:2009, Quantities and units – Part 1: General, is used as a guide in making metric conversion from yard/pound quantities.) If a value for a measurement and a corresponding value in other units are stated, the first stated value is to be regarded as the requirement. The given corresponding value may be approximate. If a value for a measurement and a corresponding value in other units are both specified as a quoted marking requirement, the first stated unit, or both, are to be provided.

1.9 Identification of requirements and recommendations

In this Standard, “shall” is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user shall satisfy in order to comply with the standard; “should” is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; and “may” is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the standard.

Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material.

Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written as requirements.

Annexes are designated normative (mandatory) or informative (non-mandatory) to define their application.
