Draft Scope/Description:

1.1* General

This Standard provides the minimum fire protection requirements for the design, construction, commissioning, operation, and decommissioning of nuclear power plants (NPPs) and small modular reactors (SMRs), including structures, systems, and components (SSCs) that directly support the NPP/SMR and the protected area.

Where requirements do not state specific applicability to NPP or SMR, the requirements apply to both type of nuclear facilities.

When a clause in this standard includes a subsection for NPPs and a subsection for SMRs, the requirements for SMRs are separate from the requirements for all other NPPs. In all other cases throughout this standard, the term NPP is inclusive of SMRs.

1.2* External events

External events such as an aircraft crash or terrorist attack are outside the scope of this Standard.

1.3 Editorials

In CSA Standards, “shall” is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the standard; “should” is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; “may” is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the standard; and “can” is used to express possibility or capability.

Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material.

Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written as requirements.

Annexes are designated normative (mandatory) or informative (non-mandatory) to define their application.

1.4 System of units

The values given in SI (metric) units are the standard. The values given in parentheses are for information only.
